DNS Issues Reported - CCGA

Incident Report for USG Services

Monitoring

After troubleshooting, it appears the edge firewall's classification engine is silently dropping the AXFR (zone transfer) traffic mid-stream.

To ensure services remain online, the public firewall rule was reverted back to the standard DNS application. This successfully restored standard UDP lookups, and recursive queries from public resolvers like Google and Cloudflare are now functioning properly.

Temporary measures have been implemented to correctly route client traffic, and a support request with Palo Alto will be submitted by CCGA to help debug why the application overrides for the AXFR stream are not functioning as expected.

Once the firewall is able to pass the zone transfer traffic, connection will be re-established so that USG may continue to serve as the secondary DNS for redundancy for CCGA.

If you are still experiencing issues, please contact the USG Service Desk at support@usg.edu or 877-251-2644.
